How to Keep Eyes Healthy As You Age

May 5, 2022

As you age, a lot of things will change about your body. One of the first things you will notice changing is your vision. The changes you will notice include:

  • Trouble distinguishing colors such as black and blue

  • Taking time adjusting to the changing levels of light

  • Losing the ability to see things close to you

However, not all is lost. You can correct these problems using prescription lenses and improved lighting. The best way is to prevent the fast change by keeping your eyes healthy as you age. Do this by making some simple lifestyle adjustments.

Stop Smoking

People who smoke are four times more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. The risk remains high even 20 years after you stop smoking. It causes oxidative stress, cellular changes, and vascular constriction.

If you have been trying to kick the habit, keep at it. The more you keep trying, the more likely you are to succeed. If you need help, ask your doctor for advice.

Wear Sunglasses

The right pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Exposure to UV rays also increases your likelihood of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Choose sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound sunglasses are the best because they protect your eyes from the sides.

Polarized lenses reduce glare, but they do not necessarily offer added protection. If you are using polarized lenses, use contact lenses with UV protection.

Safety Eyewear

Protect your eyes when you are playing sports like racquetball or hockey. Do not assume everything is okay because anything can happen. Wear helmets, protective goggles, or safety glasses. These goggles and safety glasses use polycarbonate lenses to shield your eyes. The material is impact-resistant, although they are much thinner and lighter in weight than standard plastic.

Eat Healthily

Eat your fruits and vegetables. Control the amount of sugar and processed foods you consume. Processed foods will make you overweight and affect your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. You can develop complications like diabetes and heart disease. These can result in visual problems.

Being overweight puts you at risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. It does this by increasing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Minimize Screen Time

Staring at screens for too long can result in eyestrain, dry eyes, headaches, and blurry vision. It can give you problems focusing on distant objects. To protect your eyes, do the following:

  • Always make sure that your prescription lenses are up-to-date

  • Avoid glare from lights and windows

  • If your eyes are dry, blink more often

  • Rest your eyes. Look away from the screen at an object 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes

  • If your eyestrain continues, seek medical help

Comprehensive Eye Exams

The most important thing you can do for your eyes is regular comprehensive eye exams at Eye Associates of New York. Do this at least once a year. These exams will ensure that you stay on top of any changes before symptoms arise. The doctor can develop a treatment plan and prevent you from developing vision loss.
